International students and those on OPT should purchase coverage to protect themselves in the event that they have an accident or illness, during their studies in the US.
Sonoma State University requires students to purchase the Student Secure plan, as it provides comprehensive coverage designed specifically for international students at affordable rates.
Students and those on OPT are encouraged to view the plan benefits, exclusions and frequently asked questions to familiarize yourself with how the plan works and what it covers.
Returning Students are eligible to extend or renew their Student Secure Smart level plan but the Smart level is not accepted for new students or for returning students that have allowed their Smart policy to end. Returning students: if you were treated for something on a previous policy, it will be considered a "pre-existing condition" since it occurred before the start date of the new policy and it cannot be treated right away. Pre-ex has a 12 month waiting period for the Budget level and a 6 month waiting period for the Select and Elite levels.
Students transferring from another institution must have insurance starting no later than January 17th, 2025.
* rates are based on students aged 24 and under unless otherwise noted.
