Finland Student Insurance Plans

On the 1st September 2007 the Finnish Government put into force new regulations for international students studying in Finland requiring them to have adequate international health insurance while they are studying in Finland. These new international student insurance regulation for Finland are currently set out as:

• Students who stay in Finland less than two years - these students must have a health insurance whose policy covers treatment and medication costs up to 100,000 euros.


• Students who stay in Finland a minimum of two years - these students must have a health insurance whose policy covers treatment and medication costs up to 30,000 euros.

How to apply for coverage?

You can apply for coverage in a number of ways:

Online - both plans can be purchased online with either a dedit or credit card, documents will be issued right away to your email address so you can quickly show proof of coverage for your visa.

How can I pay for coverage?

If you have a credit card (Visa, Visa Electron, MasterCard, American Express), you can apply quickly and easily online through our website, or by downloading an application and completing it with our credit card information and emailing or faxing that to us.

If you do not have a credit card, then you can apply with a money order for the amount of the insurance, along with an application form which you can send in the mail to us at:

What proof of coverage will I receive?

After you have purchased coverage, you will receive a confirmation email that will include a letter of coverage, a receipt, an id card and policy conditions. If you purchase online with a credit card, you will receive this confirmation within a few minutes of completing the transaction. If you purchase using a wire transfer, it will take up to 7 business days to receive your confirmation.

Can I get a visa letter?

Within an hour after receiving your confirmation, you will be able to log on to the Client Zone, enter your certificate number and date of birth, and download and print a visa letter. Sometimes the consulate or the police want to see this letter in addition to the confirmation of coverage.

Which plan is right for me?

If you are trying to work out what plan is right for you - both insurance options will meet the insurance requirements laid out by the Finnish Government. The Atlas International offers comprehensive travel/medical coverage that meets all of the Finnish requirements and is the least expensive option. The Student Secure offers easy monthly payments if you pay with a credit card, and it also offers some coverage that is not included in the Atlas plan, mainly maternity and mental health coverage, and coverage for pre-existing conditions after one year of continuous coverage.
