How to Renew or Extend your Student Secure Plan

August 25th, 2012 by ahoontrakul

If you are an international student, there is a high likelihood that you will be studying for more than just one year. Our Student Secure plan for international student is a great option if you plan to study outside your home country. If you already have our plan and find that you need additional coverage, you may wonder how you can extend your Student Secure plan.

Here is how to renew/extend your insurance:

1. You need to know your insurance certificate ID number. The Student Secure plan comes in three levels; Smart, Budget and Select. Regardless of whether you have the Smart, Budget or Select your certificate number would start with two letters “SS” and look something like “SS00012345”.

2. Once you know your certificate number you will be able to log on to your Student Zone account. (http://www.internationalstudentinsurance.com/student-zone/). Enter your certificate number where it says “Certificate ID” and enter your Date of Birth. You do not need to have a password to log in, so you can leave it blank.

3. Once you have logged in you should see a page similar to the one below. Click “Extend Coverage” or “Renew Coverage”.

4. Once you have clicked on the link to Extend Coverage, you will see a page that looks similar to the following:

On this page, first you would choose the date you want to extend your insurance coverage until and then you would click on “Recalculate” at the bottom of the screen. The total price that you will have to pay will then automatically update based on your extend date. The third step is to put in your new credit card information on the right side. (If you have originally purchased the plan as a monthly payment option, your credit card may already be on file and you may not be ask to fill this out again.)  Lastly, you will then click on “Proceed to Payment Screen” and then you will be asked to confirm that you want to make the payment. When everything is processed, you will be able to download an “Endorsement Document” right away as proof that you have extended your coverage.

Keep in mind that you can only extend/renew your policy before it has expired. If your policy has already expired, so make sure you do this before the plan terminated.

If you have any more questions about how to extend or renew your policy with us. Please feel free to contact our representative and we will be happy to assist you.

August 3rd, 2012 by Bryanna Davis

Students who are studying in Finland or are planning to in the near future will need to meet certain requirements when it comes to purchasing their Finland Travel Insurance. The Finnish Government regulates international students who will be studying in Finland to have the following insurance requirements met with their plan:

  • International students studying in Finland for less than two years must have a plan that includes coverage up to €100,000

Finland travel insurance plans that meet these requirements and have a $0 or $100 deductible are usually considered favorable and approved by the Finnish government.

International students studying in Finland now have a new plan option that allows them to purchase coverage that will meet the Finnish requirements and pay in Euros: the Europe Travel Insurance Plan. To give you an idea on how this plan will work for you, if you will be an international student in Finland for three years, the Europe Travel with €40,000 coverage and a €0 deductible/excess would meet your Finnish government requirements. If you will be an international student in Finland for only one or two years, the Europe Travel has €400,000 in coverage and a €0 deductible, which meet the Finland travel insurance government requirements.

The benefit amounts included in this plan are listed in Euros which takes the guess work out of converting different currencies. Also, this plan can be purchased for 365 days and give an individual a credit card or bank transfer payment option.

This Finland Travel Insurance plan will not only meet the government guidelines, but is easy on the student budget as well:

  • €40,000 in coverage is only €0.54 per day (under age 29)!
  • €400,000 in coverage is only €0.74 per day (under age 29)!

August 2012 Travel Warning

August 2nd, 2012 by Jennifer Frankel

School is just around the corner, and many of you are enjoying your time abroad. As we reported back in July, it’s important to keep up to date with the international environment. The Department of State in the United States monitors the global climate to make sure that you are informed about the latest current events and how they may affect your travel plans. Here are the latest in travel warnings summarized to give you an overview of August 2012 Travel Warnings:

  •  Travel Warning in Kenya – July 5, 2012 – Replacing the travel warning from April, the updated statement continues to warn travelers of terrorist threats and violent crimes. According to the State Department, “Terrorist acts can include suicide operations, bombings, kidnappings, attacks on civil aviation, and attacks on maritime vessels in or near Kenyan ports.” If you plan to travel to Kenya, you should avoid demonstrations and political rallies as there are concerns of possible violence outbreaks.
  • Travel Warning in Central African Republic – July 11, 2012 – This travel warning also replaces an existing travel warning from January 2012. The advisory states that all unessential travel should be delayed especially travel outside the capital, Bangui. “Armed militia groups, bandits, and poachers present real dangers, and the Central African government is unable to guarantee the safety of visitors in most parts of the country.” Both violent and petty crime is possible throughout the country and US Embassy services are limited as only “basic services” are available.
  • Travel Warning for Congo – July 25, 2012 – This warning is a replacement from January and the advisory continues to warn against travel to eastern and northeastern Congo. Security issues include armed groups and bandits which may not distinguish between civilians. Hazards that exist include motorists and pedestrians; be sure to keep all vehicles locked and windows closed while driving. There have also been outbreaks of deadly viruses and diseases that present a public health concern so it is important to get the necessary vaccinations and immunizations before traveling.
  • Travel Warning for Syria – August 1, 2012 – This travel warning replaces the existing advisory from July, recommending against travel to Syria. If currently located in the country, the advisory recommends departing immediately. U.S. citizens in Syria who are in need of emergency assistance should call the Department of State at 0969-333644 within Syria.

The Department of State has a Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) available to US citizens who want to stay informed of the latest updates. If you will be in an area that has existing travel warning or alert, as listed in our August 2012 Travel Warning, you can also provide your contact information in case an emergency happens while abroad.

If you are an international student in the US and have either our Student Secure or our Atlas Travel Medical plan with us, you know that you are covered if you ever get sick or injured while in the United States. However, you may wonder how to find a doctor to go to in case you do get sick. Good news! You can choose whichever doctor or hospital you want to go to! Our plans do not limit you to a specific doctor when you receive treatment.

However, we do recommend that you go to a doctor or hospital that already has an agreement with the insurance company. We refer to these doctors/hospitals that already have an agreement with the insurance company as in-network providers. By choosing to go to an in-network provider, you will benefit in the following ways:

  1. By receiving a network discount on your treatment
  2. Being granted the ability for the doctor to directly bill the insurance company so that you don’t have to pay the entire treatment cost out of your own pocket and getting a reimbursement later on
  3. Getting 100% coverage on eligible expenses after the deductible (on the Student Secure Select and the Atlas Plan)

International students who are asking how to find a doctor to go to will find it’s simple to find the provider they need. Our network is nationwide, so wherever you are in the USA, you won’t have a problem finding a doctor near you. When using our online provider search tool that is located directly on our website, finding a doctor is easy. You can access this tool by click on the link above or by typing www.internationalstudentinsurance.com/network into your web browser address bar.

You will see this page when you click on the link.CMN provider network

Once you are on this page, you will need to click on “USA Network” to find a doctor or hospital inside of the United States. A new window will appear that allows you to get started on your search. In step one you can choose the type of provider you are looking for, for example, if you are looking for a hospital choose “General Acute Care Hospital.” In our example below we chose “Physician” and “Family Practice” under “Physician Specialty,” this is generally what you should look for if you are just looking for a general doctor because you feel sick or have a minor injury.

Online doctor search tool

On step two, click on “ZIP code” and enter the zip code of the area that you are trying to find a doctor in. In our example, you can see we have searched for a family practice doctor within five miles of the zip code 33199 in Miami, our results have 93 different doctors to choose from.

If you already have the Student Secure plan or the Atlas Travel Medical plan with us and still need assistance on how to find a doctor or more information on how to use your insurance, please call our client relations department at the number located on the back of your insurance ID card. Our client relations department is available for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
